School and Community Centre
Education breaks the poverty cycle
Substantial contributions from a variety of generous donors enabled us to open the doors of our School and Community Centre in late 2016. It was a huge project but it means we will make a bigger impact on the lives of poor people in rural communities by providing education to help break the poverty cycle.
The School and Community Centre (VBCCC) is located about 25 kilometres outside Siem Reap, in a commune where we have been very active over the last few years with our building projects.
We have used about one third of the land to build a warehouse, which allows us to buy and store our materials in bulk and pre-cut wood panels for house builds. It has also created employment and training opportunities for some local villagers.
We have plans to add vocational training to provide more education and skills to the local community, to enable more employment opportunities.
The Community Centre offers English classes to village children and demand has been high. English is the international language and also the language of the internet and will give rural students increased study and employment opportunities.
We have also built a library on site and hope to eventually offer Khmer lessons to adults so they can read and write their own language. Sadly, many have never had any formal education and are illiterate, which adds to their vulnerability.
We aim to eventually offer a variety of training courses to upskill the local community and increase their knowledge. We are investigating the possibility of vocational training as well as short-term initiatives that can help improve, health, hygiene and living conditions for these people.
Your generous donations will help us keep the community centre running and offer a variety of programs and opportunities.
If you have a specific skill you think you could share and time to volunteer your services we would love to hear from you.
Our Community Centre was officially opened in July 2017.
